According to figures published on Friday, the number of infections registered in cities such as New York and Washington, which were the first to be affected by the new variant of the corona virus, has recently fallen. At the national level, however, infections continued to increase. New York recently recorded an average of 28,500 new infections per day, after an average of 42,000 infections two weeks earlier. The health authorities also recorded declining numbers in the capital Washington, which was hit hard by the omicron, and in Chicago. A similar pattern has been reported from the states of New Jersey and Maryland. However, experts warn against drawing hasty conclusions based on the numbers. In many states, the fifth wave has not yet peaked. The numbers continued to rise across the country. The first cases with Omikron were registered in the USA in December. Although the virus variant usually causes less severe disease progression than the delta variant, it is significantly more contagious than its predecessor variants. The proportion of seriously ill people is therefore not insignificant in absolute numbers. Currently, the United States is recording an average of 780,000 new infections per day nationwide. With 160,000 occupied hospital beds, the country recently reached a new high. On average, 1,700 people are dying of Covid-19 every day across the country. AFP #Topics
