Erlkönig Mercedes E-Class (2023) new edition without V8 is approaching the S-Class
Mercedes is working on the next generation of the E-Class. It will probably make its debut as the W214 at the end of 2022 and looks like a downsized S-Class. The current Mercedes E-Class was presented in 2016, has since been lifted and is about to change its guard at the end of 2022. Then Mercedes pushes the new model generation with the internal abbreviation W214 into the limelight. After the presentation at the end of 2022, it will go on sale at the beginning of 2023. Now our Erlkönig-Jäger has caught the new model as a sedan.
Only four and six cylinders
Stefan Baldauf Under the hood there will only be four- and six-cylinder engines. In order to put itself back at the top in its competitive field, the new E-Class has a slightly longer wheelbase (around 2.96 meters), a little more track width and optional two-axle air suspension and rear-wheel steering. It is reduced on the drive side. There will no longer be eight-cylinder engines in the E-Class. For four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel. The four-cylinder M 254 and OM 654 come with a 48-volt electrical system and ISG. The power of the petrol engine is up to 272 hp and 400 Nm, the diesel comes up to 265 hp and 550 Nm. The 2.9 liter in-line six-cylinder engines from the M 256 and OM 656 engine families deliver more power. Up to 435 hp can be expected for the petrol engines and up to 330 hp for the diesel engines. However, AMG fans will have to get used to the M 139 four-cylinder engines in versions 53 and 63, which, as a performance plug-in hybrid, will bring over 600 hp to the starting line. Overall, the battery capacity of the hybrid models should increase and thus enable purely electric ranges of up to 100 kilometers. A new rear axle construction is to create space for the enlarged battery. Schulte In addition to the sedan, the new E-Class will of course also be offered as a station wagon. An all-terrain variant is also planned again. The convertible variant is the result of a merger of the C and E class convertibles and will then probably be called the CLE and will also be available as a four-door coupé.
Equipment and design borrowings from the S-Class
When it comes to the safety package, the new E-Class W214 inherits a lot from the new S-Class, with the existing assistants mainly being adapted in terms of their scope of services. In the medium term, the E-Class should also be able to drive autonomously according to Level 3. Operation is essentially based on a large touchscreen between the driver and front passenger. But also an improved voice control should come. The basic information is presented to the E-Class driver as usual via virtual displays behind the steering wheel, presumably in 3D if desired. And the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system will also be on board. Stefan Baldauf The lines of the W214 are based more on the S class. Of course, the S-Class is also the inspiration for the design of the new E-Class. The headlights are narrower than before and only have an LED daytime running eyeliner. As with the C-Class, the bonnet star should finally be omitted from the E-Class. The two power domes on the bonnet have also disappeared on the Erlkönig. Adapted to the front, the lights also shrink significantly in height at the rear. Visible exhaust tailpipe trims are obviously no longer up-to-date either. The new E-Class hides the exhaust system – at least on the Erlkönig – behind the apron. The bow door handles are omitted and replaced by recessed handles. The beading on the flanks that used to run through the handles is also no longer visible.
Mercedes is launching the new W214 E-Class for the 2023 model year. In terms of design and equipment, it is based more on the new S-Class. The engine range now only offers four- and six-cylinder units, for the AMG models only four-cylinder units.
