Corona situation in Potsdam: Omikron continues to increase the numbers - Potsdam

Potsdam – With the corona infections in the omicron wave, one negative record follows the next in Potsdam: With 809.4 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days, Potsdam reached a new all-time high for the third day in a row since the beginning of the pandemic. Potsdam thus remains Brandenburg’s corona hotspot. On Friday, the incidence was 724.8, compared to 482.1 a week ago. The value rose by almost 68 percent within a week. The health department reported 353 infections, 154 more than last Saturday. According to experts, the omicron variant of the virus spreads so quickly because it can bypass the immune protection of vaccinated and recovered people and infect them again.

Day care centers and schools in focus

The situation in Potsdam’s hospitals has so far been decoupled from this. 23 Covid patients were reported there on Friday, nine of them in intensive care units. A week ago there were 32 patients, including nine severe cases. The course of diseases with the omicron variant is considered milder compared to earlier virus variants. Nevertheless, experts warn that the sheer number of illnesses can put a strain on the normal wards and lead to problems in the critical infrastructure.[Wenn Sie aktuelle Nachrichten aus Potsdam und Brandenburg live auf Ihr Handy haben wollen, empfehlen wir Ihnen unsere App, die sie hier für Apple und  Android-Geräte herunterladen können.]Day care centers and schools are already the focus: The incidence among five to 14 year olds in Potsdam is currently more than 1500. According to a city spokesman, 382 children and adolescents and 66 adults were infected on Friday, including 178 children from elementary schools, 67 from Kitas and 51 young people from high schools. Around every fourth facility is currently affected: there are corona cases at 63 of the 236 daycare centers, schools and care facilities. Around 1790 children and young people are in quarantine – a good 1000 more than at the beginning of the week.

Quarantine regulations cause frustration

The decision by the health department that the quarantine times that have been shortened since Thursday do not also apply to children who were previously quarantined is causing frustration and a lack of understanding among parents. Several parents wrote to City Hall demanding a change. As reported, Potsdam had relaxed the quarantine rules before the decision in the Bundesrat on Friday. Boosted contact persons do not have to be quarantined, and infected people can test themselves after seven days using a PCR test. So far, other areas of the infrastructure have been less affected. The municipal utilities – responsible for local transport, energy and water supply and garbage disposal – announced on Friday via a spokesman that sick leave was stable and corresponded to the seasonal level before the pandemic. The supply is running normally. The Bergmann-Klinikum also reported on request that sick leave was “still manageable”, as were the quarantine cases. According to the city, the start of the vaccination campaign “Biontech for everyone”, which will be continued this Saturday, was a great success. On Friday, 80 percent of the appointments were booked. Above all, people over the age of 30, who otherwise usually receive the Moderna vaccine, were vaccinated.
